How to Be a TRULY Trans-Friendly Greek
|
While Greek Organizations Can be trans-Inclusive,
the Greek System and presence as a whole is transphobic
Until all social Greek organizations stop the practice of segregating by gender, Greek life will never be fully friendly and healthy for transgender people. First, even if all traditional Greek organizations accept transgender members, people who don’t identify within the binary are still going to be excluded. Second, Greek life is another institution in society that upholds the false notion that a gender binary exists. As long as Greek life is segregated by gender and is visible to society, it perpetuates the false notion and to the people who are not involved in Greek life- they are sent a message that the binary matters. Within traditional, gender-segregated organizations, gender roles and expression are policed. Gender policing is not only harmful to trans people, but also to cisgender people. A person is further pushed into the section of whatever binary gender they are in. It robs all individuals of the opportunity to truly explore gender and when societies do not allow its member the freedom to explore gender, that society is transphobic.
